Signs That You Are Mentally Exhausted

How do you know you’re mentally exhausted?

Being mentally drained or exhausted is referred to as “Burnout” it’s not a recognized medical term. What does it mean to be mentally exhausted and what are the symptoms associated with mental exhaustion?

Please note that mental exhaustion can happen to anyone who experiences long-term stress.

How does mental exhaustion make you feel? If you are mentally exhausted you will feel overwhelmed and emotionally drained, and it can make your responsibilities and problem seem impossible to overcome. You may experience feelings of detachment and apathy which can wreak havoc on all aspects of your life.


Mental exhaustion causes physical as well as emotional symptoms. It can also impact your behavior, which others may notice before you do.

Important to things to note: These symptoms can vary from person to person and often begin to show gradually, creeping up on you during periods of extreme stress. If stress continues to weigh on you, you may reach a point when you feel as though you’re in a dark hole and can’t see your way out.

There are a variety of symptoms associated with mental exhaustion or burnout, you may not experience all of the signs or symptoms but it is important that you recognize these signs which could indicate you are on the path to mental exhaustion or burnout.

Mental exhaustion has emotional, physical and behavioral signs each of them is important to know and to recognize.


Emotional signs

Emotional signs of mental exhaustion may include:

  1. depression

  2. anxiety

  3. cynicism or pessimism

  4. apathy (feeling of not caring)

  5. detachment

  6. anger

  7. feelings of hopelessness

  8. feeling of dread

  9. lack of motivation

  10. decline in productivity

  11. difficulty concentrating

Physical signs

Physical signs of mental exhaustion may include:

  1. headaches

  2. upset stomach

  3. body aches

  4. chronic fatigue

  5. changes in appetite

  6. Insomnia

  7. weight gain or weight loss

  8. increased illness, such as colds and flu

Behavioral signs

Your mental exhaustion can cause you to behave in ways that are out of character for you. Behavioral signs may include:

  1. poor performance at work

  2. social withdrawal or isolation

  3. inability to keep personal or work commitments

  4. calling in sick to work or school more often

Remember mental exhaustion is treatable and there are a variety of resources available to help ease your symptoms and cope with stress.
