Is Online Shopping Addiction A Mental Health Condition?

Many psychologists have argued online shopping addiction is a mental health condition.

The term that is used to describe online shopping addiction is Buying-shopping disorder (BSD), and researchers believe that it affects 5% of the population.

Buying-shopping disorder (BSD) has been recognized for decades, although it is not currently classified in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual Of Mental Disorders (DSM) as an official disorder of its own. Buying-Shopping Disorder, falls under a category named ‘other specified impulse control disorder’.

Online shopping addiction is unhealthy?

BSD, particularly the online form, can result in a loop of extreme cravings for buying things and satisfaction when spending money. In turn, these cravings lead to a breakdown in self-control and ‘extreme distress’ as well as other psychiatric problems.
